Yellow ink contamination problem on Canon i950 photo printer

Pop quiz: what's wrong in this photo?

In case it isn't obvious, both of the ink tanks should contain yellow ink. However, the rear one has turned almost completely black. This ink tank was taken from my Canon i950 photo printer, which up until this point I'd been very happy with. In front is a new Canon BCI-6Y ink tank.

After a bit of research, it turns out that the print head on the i950 (and presumably the i960 too, since it is the same printer with a wider carriage) can develop a tiny crack or cracks which allow the ink from one tank to flow into an adjacent tank, thus contaminating the ink. As you can see in the photo below, in this printer the black and yellow tanks are adjacent and for some reason it is usually these two that seem to develop this problem.

I can't really complain, since I've had the printer for at least a couple of years and had excellent results up to this point. It is most likely that the problem started after printer was moved across the country, so perhaps that is the trigger for this problem.

If you are suffering from from weird colors in your prints, check your ink tanks. If the yellow is contaminated, you'll need to buy a new print head, model QY6-0043. I ordered mine from Precision Roller for $80, including free shipping. They got it here in a couple of days and now the printer is as good as new.
